8th - Mr. Heer

Hello My Name Is...

Michael Heer

I was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota where I learned to love almost all sports and was very active in golf, baseball, hockey, archery and water skiing. I was lucky enough to attend Blake School from 8th grade through High School and from there I attended University of the Pacific. After three years on the Stockton Campus I was accepted into McGeorge School of Law where my first year there also counted as my senior year of under graduate school at UOP. After graduation I passed the California State Bar and practiced law for 22 years when I retired from law and went into private business working  first, with a friend and then for the Grupe Company.

I am married to my wife Star and we have two grown sons, a daughter-in-law, one granddaughter and a grandson born last October. I have been a golfer for many years but more recently I have been a pilot and reviewer of Radio Controlled planes, drones, helicopters and a few boats and land vehicles as well. I have written hundreds of reviews of RC products for magazines and the Internet as well as being a Beta tester of new RC products. I was a Scout Master for approximately ten years and then I was the District Advancement Chairman for the Big Valley District for approximately seven years. I was also a Sunday school teacher for a number of years as well as an actor in church dramas.

In teaching I have served as a substitute teacher and as a long term substitute for second grade as well as seventh and eighth grade. Last year I taught the 8th grade here at The Next Generation Steam Academy. I have found working with youth to be the most rewarding thing I have done in my life and thus I am now teaching. I started attending San Joaquin Teacher’s College a year and a half ago and have completed the Pre-Intern Program and the first year of the Impact program. I will be attending Teacher’s College at night this year while teaching by day.

I am delighted to be teaching at the Next Generation STEAM Academy! I am delighted to be working with and teaching using the STEAM Academy approach. My students will be working and learning frequently in numerous small groups throughout the year. I will be available to students and parents with office hours including one early morning session and at least one after school session every week. This year I am teaching Social Studies and English to both the seventh and eighth grade students. I look forward to work with students on school approved projects throughout the year. I will be working with Mr. "MARS" the seventh grade teacher on some of the projects our classes will be doing this year.
